1. Judging by the description given by her neighbors, Janie Starks is looked down upon , mostly though her appearance than her actions. Although beautiful , she was perceived through rumors spread about her. Her life must have been tough since her neighbors believe she is only after money and not good enough to please a man. Everyone knew her uprising and perceived her as a woman without morals.
2.The setting portrayed in the story is one of the most influenced area of racism and was a good touch to making the story more realistic. Huston is able to include personal experiences with ease and credibility , as well as making the audience feel more emotionally connected.
3. Hurston reveals Nanny's reasoning behind Janie's marriage to be for stability. This marriage was very typical in the setting of time. The motivation behind the marriage is between pure and malevolent. The intentions for Janie's marriage are good however not Janie's desired results. Nanny wants a worry free life for her granddaughter although Janie's real happiness is altered.
4. I believe black contemporaries found Hurston's work to prove or support over generalizations of certain black beliefs and portals.
5.Janie faces many events in her life that are parallel to this situation. Janie is constantly looked down upon and judged strictly upon her appearance. Her family was not a typical family , she was raised by her grandmother which is very rare and not common. Janie was not born to an easy life and is given many challenges to overcome. Her grandmother is perceived as a woman of greed with love. The only thing Nanny was concerned about was the stability of Janie's life not her happiness yet she has good intentions. The negativity of growing up black is focused on.
6.Janie's tone defers many times throughout the chapter. She is very mellow and unaffected by any outlook on her at first. She maintains an optimistic view on her relation with her future husband but she quickly realizes it is not meant to be. She explains her experiences without sympathy which makes her more tolerable. She also deals with frustration at times due to the problems she must endure.
7.I believe the tone in the story is very sympathetic yet very positive. Despite any obstacles or issues involved with a character each character also has positive attributes. Hurston is very logical and it is reflected in her work. She explains everyone's actions through good and bad. There is an optimistic tone involved as well as she shows how life can get better , such as Janie's new beginning.
8.Jody represents happiness and bliss in Janie's life. Jody has lead Janie to a new happy she has not elt and gives her and her audience hope.
